Anthropology

Head: Andrew McWilliam

Anthropology, CHL, is a world leader in the social anthropology of Asia and the Pacific, has a distinguished program of research, publication and postgraduate training. On-going research interests of academic staff and postgraduate scholars are focused on mainland and island Southeast Asia, East Asia, South Asia, Southwest Pacific and immigrant Australia.

Anthropology is distinctive among the social sciences and humanities for its grounding in ethnographic fieldwork. Experienced in face-to-face field investigations, departmental staff and postgraduate students provide unique insights into on-going social processes in the wider region while contributing to anthropological theory. Anthropology, CHL, attracts postgraduate students from all over the world, including many from Asian and Pacific countries. Its staff are frequently sought out by public bodies such as the government and the media for their knowledge and expertise. We regularly host visiting scholars from around the world, and our alumni include many of the world's leading scholars of the region.

On Wednesday mornings, Anthropology hosts seminars from members of staff or anthropologists visiting the ANU. These seminars are held in Seminar Room A in the Coombs Building and commence at 9.30am.

For all CHL upcoming events see the anthropology events listing on CHL and for ANU anthropology events see the Anthropology event listing.
