The study of China at the ANU is both broad and deep, covering language (modern and classical), linguistics, translation (leading to a full Master of Chinese/English Translation in 2011) literature (traditional and modern), history, philosophy and religion, gender and cultural studies, politics, economics, sociology and ethnic issues, the Chinese diaspora, environmental and archaeological studies, human rights, film and art history, calligraphy and aesthetics. Across the board, links between the old and the new are emphasized.

Within the College of Asia and the Pacific, the ANU publishes three important journals: East Asian History, China Heritage Quarterly, and the China Journal.

The ANU China Institute plays the important role of bringing together all of these areas, co-ordinating the rich array of seminars offered over the course of the year.

Many of our students spend a year studying in China and Taiwan (the Year in China), and our postgraduate students spend lengthy periods doing fieldwork in the Chinese-speaking world.

Beginning in 2010, the ANU will offer a designated series of courses on Taiwan.
