From the diverse cultures and civilizations found in this area major world religions such as Buddhism and Hinduism have arisen and major Muslim and Christian communities have been located for centuries. From ancient maritime trade routes the region has led the way in developing modern global trade networks and countries such as India, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia and Vietnam play a vital role in the contemporary world economy.
