In-country study
The ANU College of Asia and the Pacific offers a variety of options for students to extend their study of the Asia-Pacific region through dedicated in-country programs. These programs provide students with the opportunity to spend an extended period in a country where their chosen language is spoken.
Students studying in-country gain much more than just an improvement in their language ability. They develop an in-depth understanding of the context in which the language is spoken. Students return from in-country study with a heightened awareness of local issues and a skill set that can only be gained from cultural immersion. Your options include:

Graduate Diploma in Asia-Pacific Studies
The Graduate Diploma in Asia-Pacific Studies is the flagship program for in-country study in the College of Asia and the Pacific. It comprises the 'Year in Asia-Pacific' study abroad program which acts as a supplement to the Bachelor of Asia-Pacific Studies, Bachelor of Asia-Pacific Security, and Bachelor of Languages (Asia-Pacific) degrees. Students may complete the graduate Diploma through the following programs:
- Year in China
- Year in Indonesia
- Year in India
- Year in Japan
- Year in Korea
- Year in Thailand
- Year in Vietnam
As the Graduate Diploma can be done concurrently with any ANU program that includes an Asian language major, students who are interested in this program should apply through UAC for one of the base degrees first.
The Year in Asia-Pacific is intended for talented and dedicated students. Language and grade requirements vary according to the program however students will be required to have at least two years of relevant language study or its equivalent to be considered eligible for the Year in Asia program. Selection is approved by the Director on advice from the relevant program convenor.
During the Year in Asia-Pacific, students take the equivalent of 48 units in language and disciplinary studies at an overseas university or equivalent institution. Students also prepare an individual study project.
Semester in Asia
The Semester in Asia program allows students to study at a partner university in the Asia-Pacific region. The program gives students the opportunity to immerse themselves in the culture of their chosen region. Students may gain up to 24 units of credit towards their undergraduate degree through this program.
Participants in the program benefit from advancement in their language ability. Furthermore they gain valuable insights into the way that societies function in their chosen region. In addition to the academic benefit from studying in country, students of the program build strong friendships and have the opportunity to travel throughout the Asia-Pacific region.
Language and grade requirements vary according to the program however students will be required to have at least one year of relevant language study or its equivalent to be considered eligible for the Semester in Asia program.
Summer/winter session courses
The College of Asia and the Pacific offers students the opportunity to participate in intensive in-country courses during the Summer and Winter holiday sessions.
The College offers a range of unique courses for in-country study. Not only are there are a number of courses that cater for students who wish to take in-country language study, there is also a variety of courses that cover contextual studies.
Courses usually run for 6-8 weeks, giving students ample time to experience their region of study. Students gain full credit for approved courses undertaken in-country. In 2012 in-country courses may be taken in the following places:
- Japan
- Indonesia
- Vietnam
- the Thai/Burma Border
- India
Overseas internships
The College of Asia and the Pacific runs a dedicated program that facilitates internships throughout the Asia-Pacific region. The program allows students to gain credit for their internship towards an undergraduate degree. The internship program gives students the opportunity to gain work experience in their region of specialisation. The skills gained from participating in an internship are invaluable preparation for a career in the Asia Pacific region.
Through the program students may choose from variety of organisations and businesses for their internship. Participants may choose to intern in the legal sector, a development NGO, an influential media outlet or a private enterprise.
