Island Southeast Asia Centre
In-Country
We welcome people in the business community, government offices, NGOs, professionals, postgraduate as well undergraduate students, students from other universities, international students to take part in the Centre's newly expanded in-country study options. These include intensive language training in one of the best training centres in the country, and work experience at one of a dozen institutions, operating in a wide range of fields: media, community development, community education, religion, performing arts, legal aids, human right, environment, and civil society.
The Indonesian In-country Courses at ANU are held at Satya Wacana Christian University in Salatiga and locally known as 'PIBBI' (Program Intensif Bahasa dan Budaya Indonesia) or Intensive Courses in Indonesian Language and Culture. Established in 1973 this Centre is probably the oldest institution for training Australians on a regular basis. Over 3,500 foreigners have graduated from the Centre. In 2005, ANU and Satya Wacana University signed a Memorandum of Understanding and since then, PIBBI has been approved as an ANU internal Indonesian course.
Students can choose to take the course for four weeks (worths one semester course on campus) or seven weeks (worths two semester courses on campus). The latter enables students to go to the next language level upon successful completion of the in-country program when they return.
The course Practical Assignment in Asia and the Pacific helps participants to develop the necessary skills to meet the challenges of working with Indonesian professionals anywhere, or with international bodies operating in Indonesia. It will extend the pragmatic language skills, deepen understanding of the unwritten conventions and social norms, and professional environments and give practical experience of working in a real-life situation. This should lay the foundations for a life-long constructive engagement with colleagues in Indonesia.
