Knowledge of history of international relations influences how we understand current international affairs. While the IR discipline has been significant in shaping this knowledge, there has been a fundamental criticism of the nature of this knowledge both within and without the discipline in recent years, prompting a ‘historical turn’ in the discipline. A similar historical turn is also evident in the discipline of International Law. Meanwhile, there has been a significant development in the discipline of history due to its ‘international/transnational/global turn’, and there is now a substantial field, which we can term the history of global governance. In this context, George Lawson, historical sociologist at LSE, together with Barry Buzan, has made an urgent call for IR to work closely with the field of global history (2015). In this workshop, Lawson will explore what kind of history IR should write and what constructive inter-disciplinary approaches between IR and global history could be taken, and then open up a discussion with those interested from IR, History, International Law, Diplomacy, Area Studies, and Global Governance/Politics.

All academics and PhDs from these disciplines are welcome. Please contact tomoko.akami@anu.edu.au, as we need to have a good idea of your fields and the overall numbers.

George Lawson is Associate Professor at the Department of International Relations at LSE. His theoretical works examine the relationship between history and theory, with a particular interest in global historical sociology (eg. 2017, with Julian Go). His two books on revolutions (2005, and forthcoming form Cambridge) use this approach. He also applies this history-theory approach to debates on global modernity, and his publications from this project include The Global Transformation (2015 with Barry Buzan), and articles in the journals, such as International Studies Quarterly, European Journal of International Relations and International Affairs.
