Date & time
My work developed under an ARC Linkage project with Rio Tinto Alcan on bauxite mining leases in the country of the Wathayn people. Others studied large shell and earth mounds while I explored more recent use of the landscape, recording some recent sites and oral history and developing a cultural map. I hoped to contribute to unravelling the archaeological story of the area, but realised that little of the published research gets back to the Traditional Owners, so have explored ways to redress this lack. The usefulness of the research project beyond compliance with Native Title regulations and RTA’s cultural heritage management regime becomes more relevant as the end of mining in some areas leads to the hand-back of rehabilitated land to the Traditional Owners.
