Tanka poetry has a long history—over 1,300 years. While it speaks from the past, it is also a vibrant contemporary poetic genre.  We invite YOU to contribute your poetry—in either Japanese or English or both—to add to the community of Tanka lovers around the world. 

This platform is to encourage more people around the globe to enjoy the beauty of Tanka and to give greater voice to the poet within you. So visit our website at tanka.weblogs.anu.edu.au and submit your Tanka contributions in either Japanese or English in the following two categories:

  1. Individual tanka on the theme of “Roots” – up to 5 poems
  2. Free themed 15 Poem English Tanka Sequence

Winning works will be published on the website and in a bilingual volume.

Submission Dates: 1 April–30 May 2020

Review Period: By end of August 2020

Initiated by award-winning poet Noriko Tanaka, 短歌と TANKA is a collaborative project with Nara University, Osaka University of the Arts, the University of Melbourne, CJC Bluebells Tanka Group, Melbourne Tanka Group, Paris Tanka Club, Limestone Tanka Group, Yamamayu Tanka Group, translator Amelia Fielden and Nobuyuki Sakamoto (Director of Takaoka Manyo History Museum).
