From 2018 students will be able to take a refreshed major in Korean language and a new major in Korean Studies. For Korean language students the new pathway will be Korean 1-6 followed by two Advanced Korean courses, one on Film and Society and the other on Literature and Media. These two courses will be convened by Professor Hyaeweol Choi. The study of Korean provides students unique insight into both South and North Korea, as well as in-depth knowledge of their cultures, histories and socio-political development. In an era of rapidly increasing connections between Korea and Australia knowledge of Korean offers students the possibility to participate in the growing ties between these countries.
The School is delighted to offer a new full major in Korean Studies, the only major of its kind offered at a university in Australia. The major consists of a wide range of courses on history, politics, society and culture, offering an interdisciplinary and transnational perspective. Taught by renowned scholars from the College of Asia and the Pacific, students of this maj or will gain a nuanced understanding of the past and present of the peninsula, and the ability to critically discuss current affairs related to North and South Korea.
In a further development the School is offering a new Advanced Minor in Korean Language. Designed for students who already possess a high level of competence in Korean, the Advanced Minor consists of four upper level courses. Students will gain advanced language skills as well as a historical and sociocultural understanding of issues facing Korea. This minor is suitable for heritage or background learners of Korean or those who have conducted study of the language to a high level.
