The Politics and International Affairs unit in CHL undertakes research and teaching on political and international issues in the Asia-Pacific region. Our research and teaching interests range from contemporary affairs to the deep political history of the region. Our interests include the emergence of the modern state system in the region, the role of religion in politics, rights and the practice of law, the character of democracy, the role of state institutions, national identity, propaganda and various forms of state and non-state violence.
Our staff have long experience of fieldwork in their countries of expertise and we strongly emphasise fieldwork and language competence in our postgraduate training. We use social science theory to investigate the complex reality of present and past in the region, and we use the insights that come from our region to develop and challenge conventional theory.
