China Heritage Quarterly
China Heritage Quarterly, is published online every three months (March, June, September, December). ISSN 1833-8461
CHQ began publication as China Heritage Newsletter in 2005, becoming the China Heritage Quarterly in 2006. It was designed as an integral part of, and the main scholastic vehicle for, the China Heritage Project set up by Geremie Barmé and Bruce Doar in RSPAS in 2005 with support from the then Director, Jim Fox, and the VC, Ian Chubb. The project was established as part of the general effort to integrate Chinese Studies at The ANU. Other related developments were the establishment of The ANU China Institute in 2008, and the more recent moves towards a new national centre. Doar left the China Heritage Project in 2007.
China Heritage Quarterly is edited by Geremie R. Barmé and covers recent developments and scholarship in areas related to China's heritage. From 2008, the Quarterly has expanded its purview to include more material on literature, culture (in the broadest sense) and translation.
Each issue of the Quarterly provides readers with a different focus, which is amplified in detail in the Editorial. This is followed by Features, a section which contains articles related to the theme of the issue. Articles contains scholastic studies of various aspects of China's cultural heritage, while New Scholarship covers recent scholastic endeavours, conference reports, book reviews, material on recent monographs and, when appropriate, bibliographical material related to the focus of the issue.
This online quarterly is produced under the aegis of the China Heritage Project, which provides a focus for university-wide research on traditional China, its modern interpretations and recent scholarship. Under the direction of Geremie R. Barmé, the Project advocates a 'New Sinology' that builds on traditional Sinological strengths while emphasizing a robust engagement with the complex and shifting realities of contemporary China.
A recent and innovative publication, interest in and support for CHQ has grown exponentially. Major contributors from international institutions are an indication of its reach and influence.
