Pacific Linguisitics

Pacific Linguistics is the major international publisher of books on the indigenous languages of South and Southeast Asia, the Pacific Islands and Australia, and publishes 8 to 10 book-length peer-reviewed monographs or collections of papers each year. Primarily focusing on the many small languages of the region, many now endangered, it publishes classic reference works such as grammars, dictionaries and atlases, as well as scholarly monographs and edited collections of papers on aspects of the languages ranging from their history to their contemporary uses. The first volume of what became Pacific Linguistics was published by the Linguistic Circle of Canberra in 1962. In 1964, the name of the series was changed to Pacific Linguistics and the series has published some 600 volumes over 45 years. Pacific Linguistics also publishes the Journal of the Southeast Asian Linguistics Society (ISSN 1836-6821), a peer reviewed annual journal now in its 3rd year.

To ensure better worldwide distribution, from late 2011 Pacific Linguistics will become a series (still with the same name) of the publisher Mouton de Gruyter.

Pacific Linguistics is proud to act as a vehicle for the dissemination of knowledge about the languages of the Pacific and the Pacific Rim, many of which are little known, and to bring them to the attention of scholars around the world, as well as providing local communities with published language material, at a time when many minority languages are under threat. It is safe to say that Pacific Linguistics has published more grammars than any other publisher in the world, regardless of region, as well as a very considerable number of dictionaries.
