In September 2022, a new three-year research project will be starting up at ANU entitled ‘Body, language, and socialisation across cultures’(BLS). Headed by Emeritus Professor Alan Rumsey, with funding from the Australian Research Council, the project aims to advance the understanding of how people learn languages, and in the process become socialised into particular cultures and communities.
In the lead-up to the BLS project, the Centre of Excellence for the Dynamics of Language(CoEDL) recently held an open conference at ANU on the more general topic of ‘Sign, gesture and communicative multimodal modality in cross-cultural perspective’.
The purpose of the conference was to introduce the BLS project to a wide public in Australia, promote dialogue with other researchers with related interests and expertise, and increase people’s awareness and appreciation of the role of bodily action in human communication.
