Giti is a PhD student in Anthropology in the School of Culture, History & Language. Her research involves a sensory ethnography of perfume culture in north India, building on her expertise and knowledge as a perfumer working with Indian perfume materials through her business, Guna Natural.

Giti’s study will focus on the life cycle of two perfumes, Gulab and Attar Mitti, and the lived experiences of different actors throughout its production and consumption process, to understand the contemporary significance of perfume from multiple perspectives.

In-depth ethnographic research will provide a sensory lens for understanding these everyday realities and inequalities within the industry, while identifying opportunities for addressing issues of equity, sustainability and nationhood.
