Dr. Tim Maloney, who passed away on 2 November 2024, was a brilliant archaeologist and beloved human being. Known for his enthusiasm for fishing, hunting, and camaraderie, his sudden departure leaves an irreplaceable void. He completed his academic journey at ANU, later joining Griffith University, where he made significant contributions to the study of early human technologies in Island Southeast Asia. Our heartfelt condolences go to his family, especially his wife Eve, mother Christine, and brother Jake.

Dr. Tim Ryan Maloney
Judith Pabian
Judith Pabian, who passed away on 23 October 2024, was a dedicated colleague and PhD graduate whose tireless efforts in grant support left a lasting impact. Her wide-ranging life experiences fueled her ability to support various research topics, from protesting nuclear weapons to advocating for refugee rights. Even after her retirement, she pursued her passion for history, earning her PhD and publishing an acclaimed translation. Judith's legacy will be cherished by all who knew her.


Dr. Deryck Scarr
We mourn the loss of Dr. Deryck Scarr, a prolific historian of the Pacific, especially Fiji. His extensive body of work includes 11 books and numerous scholarly articles. An avid yachtsman and cherished family member, Dr. Scarr's contributions to Pacific history are unparalleled. He is survived by his daughter Miranda, her family, and his brother Jeremy.
Wal Ambrose
Wal Ambrose, an esteemed archaeologist and mentor, passed away on 9 January 2024. Known for his diverse talents, Wal's career at ANU spanned five decades, influencing countless students and colleagues. We extend our condolences to his family, with a celebration of his life held at the Coombs tearoom.


Dr. Noriko Tanaka
Dr. Noriko Tanaka, a collaborator with our very own Late Professor Carol Hayes, passed away on 26 May after a long battle with cancer. Her contributions, particularly in collaboration with Carol, and her beautiful Japanese calligraphy workshop during the 2023 Immersia festival, left a lasting impression on our community. We offer our deepest condolences and remember her fondly.
Professor Donald John Noble Denoon
We honour Professor Donald John Noble Denoon, who passed away on 3 July 2024. His tenure at ANU from 1982 to 2003 was marked by significant contributions to the School of Culture, History & Language. He is survived by his family, including his wife Mary Mortimer and their children.
