As the fourth most-spoken language in the world, learning Hindi offers links into diverse networks, cultural enrichment and unprecedented career prospects.

Less than 10% of the 1.8 billion people who live in South Asia (India, Pakistan, Bangladesh) speak English. A large majority of South Asians speak Hindi or one of its sister languages, such as Urdu.

Learning Hindi gives you direct access to the current lives and historical experiences of one quarter of humanity and to hundreds of years of cultural, religious, and artistic traditions. For example, Hindi, or Bollywood, films are popular globally and they are much better understood in Hindi directly.

Speaking Hindi will also give you an understanding of Urdu. Both of these languages are amongst the fastest growing languages in Australia and Indian communities worldwide.

The Indian diaspora globally has a diverse history that is often tied together by languages like Hindi. Learning Hindi through ANU would be the perfect complement to students also studying: global health, international relations, political science, development studies, economics, linguistics, law, trade and the arts.

Overview

Hindi at ANU offers a student-centred, flexible and supportive learning experience. As an Indo-European language with some shared linguistic heritage with English, Hindi can be an accessible choice for English-speaking students interested in learning an Asian language.

Students learn to read and write in Devanagari, the script used for Hindi as well as other South Asian languages, including Nepali, Marathi and Sanskrit.

In the first year, students build practical skills to speak about themselves and their everyday lives. At the intermediate level, they develop the language needed to explore and discuss experiences across the Hindi-speaking world. Advanced students can further strengthen their proficiency while focusing on specialised areas that reflect their interests.

Study options

Hindi classes at ANU focus on live, interactive learning, giving every student opportunities to speak, practise and learn with their teachers and classmates.

Classes are delivered in a hybrid format, allowing students to participate either on campus or online. Online students join the live classroom alongside those attending in person, creating a shared and collaborative learning experience.

A wide range of online resources, including written materials, audio, illustrations and videos, supports learning inside and outside the classroom.

    Undergraduate courses include Hindi 1, Hindi 2, Hindi 3, Hindi 4, Hindi 5 and Hindi 6.
