Title: ANU's cultural heritage fieldschools: Combining disciplines and expanding student experiences

Abstract

In 2022 two new field schools were launched at ANU, in Papua New Guinea and on the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria, Australia. Run under the umbrella of the Evolution of Cultural Diversity Initiative in the School of Culture, History & Language, and together with the long-running offering in Vanuatu, the field schools were explicitly designed to be cross-disciplinary and provide students opportunities to collaborate with local communities and industry professionals. The Mornington field school, in particular, is unique in its scope and run in partnership with a leading cultural heritage consultancy and a Traditional Owner Land Council. Although the field schools are built around archaeological fieldwork they connect students with a wide range of perspectives and disciplines to explore the processes which have shaped the human past and influence our present.

This seminar will cover how these fieldschools were designed to complement in-class learning by developing and applying skillsets in a challenging but supported environment, including student perspectives of their experiences. It will also cover the scope of each fieldschool, the outcomes, future plans over the coming years.
