Oc Eo is an eminent archaeological site located in the Vietnamese Mekong Delta dated to the first millenium AD. It has gained attention due to its status as an important port for transcontinental trade and a city of the 'Funan' polity recorded in Chinese sources. While previous research has focused on activities of elites and prominent high-value items of trade, this presentation addresses the inception and continuity of the Oc Eo site through pottery analysis.
By examining everyday stoves and containers, we catch a glimpse of how different groups at Oc Eo negotiated their social boundaries, incorporated new aesthetics and technologies, as well as organised their production and exchange activities, providing an alternative material narrative to what has been traditionally known as 'Funan'.
