M.Ling (Monash)

I am a PhD student in the School of Culture, History and Language at the Australian National University. I am working on the Grammar of Sikule, a Barrier Islands Language spoken on the northwestern parts of Simeulue island, Aceh province - Indonesia. I finished my master at Monash University. My research at that time was on Lamaholot Dialect Variations. Lamaholot is an Austronesian language spoken in eastern parts of Flores island, East Nusa Tenggara province, Indonesia. It has 33 different dialects and I investigated four of them, that is, Waibalun, Lewolema, Nusa Tadon and Lewokukung. I consider myself a multilingual speaker since I can speak three local Malay varieties (Larantuka Malay, Kupang Malay & Alor Malay), one indigenous language (Lamaholot), two national languages (Standard Indonesian & English). I am also intelligible to Uab Meto and studied Latin grammar at High school.

Research Interest

I have a broad interest to linguistics aspects, particularly to descriptions of Austronesian and Trans-New Guinean languages spoken in eastern Indonesia. I also enjoy dictionary-making processes of local languages in eastern Indonesia. By finishing my PhD study, I am interested to see a clear link between West Malayo-Poynesian and Central East Malayo-Polynesian languages, particularly dealing with a complete distribution/map of grammatical relation and voice in those Austronesian linguistic areas.
