Nour is a PhD student in Asian History at the Australian National University. His research explores the intellectual and transnational history of Indonesia, focusing on how ideas travel and evolve across time, space, and cultural contexts. His doctoral project examines the construction of national education ideals through the lens of leftist and communist movements in late colonial and early independence Indonesia, drawing on Edward Said’s theory of traveling ideas. Nour analyses how Marxist-Leninist and Maoist thought were adopted and adapted within Indonesia’s socio-cultural framework, and how the Indonesian Communist Party (PKI), as the principal representative of communism in Indonesia at the time, sought to translate these ideologies into practice — along with the challenges and responses encountered — leading up to 1965. Nour completed a bachelor's degree in history at Padjadjaran University, Indonesia, before pursuing a Master of Asian and Pacific Studies at the Australian National University. He later earned a master's degree in educational development from National Chung Cheng University, Taiwan. His academic work encompasses intellectual, political, and transnational history, with a particular focus on Indonesia during the first half of the 20th century, before the emergence of the New Order regime. His previous research has explored themes of nationalism, revolutionary movements, history education, and the political history of Southeast Asia, with attention to both national and local contexts in Indonesia.
